Speaking ahead of the event, which coincides with Freedom Day, Mpumalanga Acting MEC for Community Safety, Security, and Liaison Busisiwe Shiba said there will be strict law enforcement of the road rules.
Motorists were warned against defying traffic rules or partaking in any other criminal activities.
“Motorists must obey the rules of the road to avoid the deaths and injuries emanating from road crashes,” said MEC Shiba.
“We are expecting high volumes of traffic on all major routes leading to Mbombela.
“Therefore, our traffic law enforcement officers will be working with all members of the security cluster and will be on extremely high alert this weekend.”
MEC Shiba said fatigue was also contributing to crashes.
“Motorists need to rest sufficiently along the way, alternate driving wherever possible,” MEC Shiba said.
“They must be vigilant when enjoying themselves, especially at night.
“All drivers must prioritise their safety, that of their passengers and road users even when they leave the city after the awards.”
