Belfast – Five people died Saturday night in a head-on collision between a Volkswagen Polo and a Chevrolet bakkie along the N4 in Wonderfontein, near Belfast, Mpumalanga.
Four persons died on the scene of the horror crash.
The driver of the VW Polo succumbed to his injuries in hospital earlier today, (Sunday 28 April 2024).
Two survivors – the driver and a passenger – from the bakkie were receiving medical treatment in hospital.
Commenting on the tragedy on Sunday, Mpumalanga Acting MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Busisiwe Shiba said “human error” was contributing to fatal crashes in the province.
She said motorists should always be cautious and obey road rules to avoid such deadly crashes.
“Motorists must always obey the rules. Most of the crashes were avoidable… mainly caused by the attitude of most motorists,” Acting MEC Shiba said.
“We are once more appealing to our drivers to always be alert on the road.
“Obeying of the rules is a key and non-negotiable requirement on every person who drives on our roads. We must all play in making our roads safer.”
The five deceased have not yet been identified.
