President Cyril Ramaphosa will speak later Tuesday on how his government will deal with the Covid-19 spike.

South Africa is in the midst of a third wave. This week the daily confirmed Covid-19 cases went past five thousand.

As many as 114 new Covid-19 related deaths were recorded overnight bringing the total fatalities to 57 879.

With the vaccination drive not going so well – South Africa had to destroy two million contaminated Covid-19 vaccine doses – the surge of new cases is cause for alarm.

Since the pandemic started more than a year ago about 1,6 million Covid-19 cases have been confirmed in South Africa.

Earlier on Tuesday, the presidency issued a brief statement saying Ramaphosa would speak on the matter. He is expected to announce tighter measures to curb the spread of the deadly virus.
