Johannesburg Mayor Geoff Makhubo is the latest high-profile person to catch Covid-19 in Gauteng.
“The executive mayor has from today gone into self-quarantine as part of the recovery process,” said City of Johannesburg spokesperson Mlimandlela Ndamase in a statement released on Sunday.
Ndamase added: “Gauteng and indeed Johannesburg are officially in the third wave”.
Since the coronavirus hit South Africa 58 702 have died from Covid-19.
Ndamase said Mayor Makhubo will continue to “monitor and provide” guidance in the prevention of Covid-19.
Last week on Wednesday President Cyril Ramaposa placed South Africa under Alert Level Three restrictions that include a curfew and limits on gatherings.
The latest daily recorded Covid-19 cases are more than 13 000, with the most of them in Gauteng.
