Police shot dead four hijacking suspects in a shootout on Friday when they swooped on a huge gang in President Street, Midrand.
Bheki Cele, the police minister said the gang of 27 suspects was multi-national.
Police recovered several hijacked luxury cars after the shootout. They also recovered high calibre weapons.
It was thought the cars were to be driven to the Beit Bridge border.
Four other suspects were wounded in the shootout. At least 16 suspected syndicate members were arrested.
