Naledi Local Municipality Mayor Neo Schalk lost his life in a head-on collision along the N14 just outside Vryburg on Sunday morning.
Both the mayor and the driver of the other vehicle were certified dead at the scene of the accident.
North West Community Safety and Transport Management MEC Sello Lehari said: “I am saddened by his untimely death especially at the time we are preparing for local government elections,” said MEC Lehari.
MEC Lehari passed his condolences to the family.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and the council. I will be visiting the family this week,” said Lehari.
