A man was burnt beyond recognition on Thursday morning after his car collided head-on with a bakkie and caught alight along the N2 Northbound – between KwaMashu and Umhlanga, north of Durban.

Netcare 911 said paramedics responded to the emergency at 8:15.

“Reports indicate that a car and bakkie were involved in a head-on collision, resulting in the car bursting into flames, spreading to the second vehicle,” said Shawn Herbst, Netcare 911 spokesperson.

“Medics assessed the scene and found two patients.

“One occupant from the car had sadly been burnt beyond recognition.”

The second patient from the bakkie had sustained moderate injuries and was treated on the scene by advanced life support paramedics, said Herbst.

Police are investigating the circumstances leading to the fatal collision.

The name of the deceased has not yet been released.
