A video of a man being shot in broad daylight while inside his car at an intersection in Sandton went viral before the police realised the victim was one of their own – Sergeant David Tsedu.

This brazen shooting incident captured on video and posted on social media occurred on Thursday morning at about 11:00.

Sergeant Tsedu, who was stationed at the City Deep Port of Entry, was driving along Katherine Street in Sandton when he was accosted by armed robbers and shot.

The robbers shot and wounded Sergeant Tsedu before stealing his service pistol and other items. They fled in a getaway car that had been waiting in the opposite lane.

Police said Sergeant Tsedu was taken to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries upon arrival.

National Police Commissioner General Khehla John Sitole on Friday condemned the attack and sent his condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Sergeant Tsedu.

“The motive for the incident is the central focus of our investigation. We will not rest until those who are behind this brazen attack have been apprehended,” said General Sitole.

The police are appealing to motorists and other eyewitnesses to come forward and assist investigations by calling the crime stop hotline number on 086 00 10111 or downloading the MySAPS App on any smartphone.

Witnesses may remain anonymous and all information will be treated with the strictest confidence.
