Joseph Modime (59) and Emily Mashaba (54) who were caught with the severed head of a lion have been granted bail of R1 500 each.

The pair appeared in the Zeerust Magistrates’ Court facing charges of contravening the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act 10 of 2004.

Modime and Mashaba from Tembisa, Johannesburg, were arrested by the Hawks acting on a tip-off.

Apparently, they wanted to sell the severed lion’s head to a traditional healer for R350 000.

The sale was intercepted by a police agent, who had set the trap with a traditional healer.

The pair were arrested at a petrol station in Zeerust with the severed lion’s head wrapped in a refuse bag.

The matter was postponed to 16 February 2022 for further investigations.
