ON THE RUN: Mbongiseni Mkandla, one of the six escapees freed by an armed gang en route to a court to Vosloorus

After a daring escape that involved an ambush by a three-man rifle-wielding gang one of the escapees – Bafeletse Nyembe – on Monday gave himself up to authorities.

Since Friday’s escape in which six men escaped en route to a Vosloorus court in Boksburg, police have been hot on their heels.

The men face serious charges including attempted murder and business robbery. One of the escapees only had a shoplifting rap before he was sprung free.

Hours after the escape on Friday, police rearrested fugitives Nkululeko Nkomo and Robert Hlatshwayo.

The pair were nabbed after they were spotted at a Petrol Station in Pretoria.

Feeling the heat, Nyembe handed himself over to the Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Brigadier Brenda Muridili said Nyembe appeared in court on the East Rand facing a charge of theft and an additional charge of escaping from lawful custody.

“He has been remanded in custody and he will appear again in court on 27 January 2022,” said Brigadier Muridili.

Nkomo and Hlatswayo have also appeared in court for business robbery, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, and escaping from lawful custody.

They have been remanded in custody and are due in court again on 27 January 2022.

Their accomplices Thulani Dube, Augustine Moyo, and Mbongiseni Mkandla are still on the run.

“The manhunt for the remaining three fugitives continues,” said Brigadier Muridili.
