FLOODED: Rescue workers
SHARE

Heavy overnight rains have resulted in floods in and around the Centurion Hotel, where low-water bridges were submerged and at least one car has been swept away by rushing waters into the nearby lake.

On Saturday morning, the Hennops River burst its banks and flooded many parts of Centurion, leaving informal houses partially submerged in water.

Tshwane emergency services spokesperson, Charles Mabaso, said the areas most affected include large parts of Centurion and the Centurion Lake Hotel.

He said sections of Mamelodi, northeast of Pretoria in Tshwane had also been affected by flooding.

Mabaso said about 60 people had sought refuge on rooftops in the Eerste Fabriek area.

Tshwane MMC for Human Settlements Abel Tau was in Mamelodi to monitor and assist rescue efforts.

There were no reports of casualties, but emergencies rescue workers were on high alert.

By midmorning areas near Lakeside Mall in Benoni had also reported flooding.

The Weather Service has issued a flood warning and said the heavy rains were expected to continue throughout the weekend. Motorists have been warned to avoid low-water bridges.
