Senior Municipal Infrastructure Support Agency (MISA) official, Lizeka Tonjeni, on Tuesday appeared in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on charges of corruption related to a Digital Vibes contract.
MISA is a national government component that is accountable to the Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
In 2018 when MISA awarded a tender of almost R4 million to Digital Vibes to render communication services for a period of 24 months, the accused was nominated as a project manager.
She was responsible for the appointment and management of the service provider, and to whom all communication had to be addressed.
It is alleged that from December 2018 until August 2020, while Tonjeni was still a project manager, she received dubious payments of R160 000 from Digital Vibes.
The Hawks Serious Corruption Offences investigated the matter, which culminated in the 47-year-old Tonjeni handing herself in at the Pretoria Central Police Station on Tuesday morning.
Tonjeni was then brought before the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court.
The state did not oppose her bail application but asked the court to impose conditions.
As a result, Tonjeni was ordered to hand in her passport to the clerk of the court and not travel outside Gauteng without informing the investigating officer.
The Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court granted Tonjeni bail of R5 000.
The matter will be back in court on 15 June 2022 for disclosure of the docket.
Lumka Mahanjana, NPA Regional Spokesperson, said investigations continue and more arrests were imminent.
Digital Vibes has also been the subject of an Special Investigating Unit probe over the dodgy R150 million communications tender it won from the department of health.
