The police in Gauteng this week scored impressive successes in their battle against crime as they arrested several hijacking suspects, and recovered an assortment of high calibre weapons.
They also recovered a number of luxury cars that had been reported hijacked.
On Wednesday, the Benoni Flying Squad pulled over a minibus taxi with six occupants on the N12 highway.
After a search, the law enforcers found an unlicensed gun, ammunition, housebreaking implements, a toy gun and suspected stolen property.
Three suspects, aged between 34 and 42 were arrested.
The unlicensed gun has since been positively linked to a theft case reported at Honeydew Police Station in 2020.
In another incident on the same day, the Benoni Flying Squad acted on a tip-off about the location of a suspected stolen car.
They found the white Mazda Rustler bakkie that had been reported as stolen at the Modimolle Police Station.
A 50-year-old suspect was subsequently arrested.
Still, on the same day, the Benoni Flying Squad swooped on a truck stop in Pomona, where they recovered hijacked double-truck trailers.
Two suspects, aged 22 and 41 were arrested.
Colonel Dimakatso Sello said this week the police in Johannesburg recovered four stolen vehicles and seized four AK-47 assault rifles in two separate incidents.
On Wednesday, the police went to a plot in Kameeldrift West, where they found three stolen vehicles, three AK-47 assault rifles, and ammunition. A man was arrested.
At another plot in Randfontein, police arrested a 33-year-old man after they seized an AK-47 assault rifle with the serial number filed off. Police also recovered three magazines with ammunition and a hijacked double cab bakkie.
Also on the same day, a joint operation involving various law enforcement agencies in Kempton Park arrested a 28-year-old suspect after they recovered two unlicensed firearms, and ammunition as well as a BMW 320d and Audi S3 that were reportedly hijacked.
