Fugitive brothers Rajesh and Atul Gupta – wanted in South Africa for their role in state capture – have been arrested in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
State capture cost South Africa an estimated R250 billion siphoned in dodgy tenders.
On Monday night the SA Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services said it “received information from law enforcement authorities in the UAE that fugitives of justice, namely, Rajest and Atul Gupta have been arrested”.
In a terse statement the ministry said: “Discussion between various law enforcement agencies in the UAE and SOuth Africa on the way forward are ongoing”.
The statement added: “The South African government will continue to co-operate with the UAE.”
When the net was closing in on the Gupta brothers – known as former president Jacob Zuma’s friends – they fled South Africa in 2016 and settled in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
