Comair, which operates the South African franchise of British Airways and Kulula.com, on Thursday threw in the towel and announced it was shutting down the business “indefinitely”.

The struggling airline, which suspended flights just over a week ago, said: “Regrettably, the requisite funding could not be raised in order for the company to continue with its operations.”

Comair added: “Accordingly, the company’s joint business rescue practitioners give notice herewith that they no longer believe that there’s os a reasonable prospect that the company can be rescued”.

Comair operates 26 Boeing 737 aircraft, across its two airline brands, British Airways and kulula.com

The airline, which has just under 2 000 employees, said customers who confirmed travel on the 31 May 2022 sale, have been refunded.

“If funds have not reflected in your account within seven working days, please contact your issuing bank to enquire,” said a notice on Twitter from the airline.

Comair has been running charter operations since 1946.

On Tuesday, Comair’s application for liquidation will be heard n the high court.
