At least 15 people died Friday morning in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck along M17 Hornsnek Road, near Bundu Inn, North of Pretoria.
The collision occurred at around 6 am. Drivers of both vehicles – the bus and the truck – were among the dead.
“The accident has so far claimed the lives of 15 people, two from the truck and 13 from the bus. Amongst the deceased are eight women and seven men,” Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba, spokesperson Tshwane Metro Police Department.
As many as 37 people have been injured and three are in a critical condition. The injured re taken to Dr. George Mukhari, Steve Biko and Kalafong hospitals.
Tshwane Emergency Services, Gauteng Emergency Medical Service and private ambulance services were on the scene.
“Details of how the accident occurred are still under investigation,” said Mahamba.
The MMC of community safety, Alderman Grandi Theunissen has sent condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
The road has been temporarily closed at the intersection of N4 and Rosslyn Road. Motorists are urged to avoid and use alternative roads.
The Tshwane Metro Police Department said it will continue to monitor until the roads are opened.
