WAY UNDER EXPECTATIONS: Animated movie Lightyear - banned in the UAE - is reportedly not making as much money as had been projected

Disney‘s Lightyear animated movie is coming in way under its $70M-$85M projection with a $51M-$55M three-day weekend to Universal/Amblin’s second weekend of Jurassic World Dominion with $57.1M, Deadline Hollywood reported on Saturday.

Earlier this week, Lightyear was banned in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for “violation of the country’s media content standards.”

The feature film was scheduled for release in UAE theaters on Thursday, but the UAE’s Media Regulatory Office announced it would ban the movie.

“The government body didn’t specify in its tweet which part of ‘Lightyear’ violated its content standards, but Executive Director Rashid Khalfan Al Nuaimi told Reuters it was based on the the inclusion of homosexual characters,” reports CNBC.

The movie features a same-sex relationship and brief kiss, which are illegal in the UAE and the rest fof the Gulf, where homosexuality is illegal.

Entertainment news website Deadline Hollywood says Lightyear won’t be showing in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Egypt or Indonesia.

The Media Regulatory Office announced that the animated film Lightyear, which is scheduled for release on 16th June, is not licensed for public screening in all cinemas in the UAE, due to its violation of the country’s media content standards. pic.twitter.com/f3iYwXqs1D
