An ambulance driver and a medic died in a horror rear-end collision along the N1 South, near Codrington in Waterberg, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Indications from the scene are that the speeding ambulance crashed into a stationary truck.
ER24 said it, “can confirm that on the 21st of June, at approximately 7 am, two ER24 medics from the Polokwane branch were tragically killed when their ambulance rear-ended a stationary truck on the N1 highway near the Codrington offramp, Limpopo”.
The crews were returning to their branch after they had completed transporting a patient to a hospital for further treatment.
ER24 said it will be working closely with the relevant authorities to investigate the cause of the collision.
“We offer our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of our ER24 brothers and wish them peace during this difficult time,” said the emergency medical service.
Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya has conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the families of the two emergency personnel.
“It is disturbing to wake up to the sad news of the passing of emergency workers who died in the line of duty. These are the same people we rely on to save lives on the roads. We call on our drivers to be extra cautious and drive within the limits.” said MEC Lerule-Ramakhanya.
