The 12 suspects arrested in connection with a murder and robbery spree in Alexandra township – that included the fatal shooting of Alex FM DJ Jorontinah – appeared at the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court, Johannesburg, on Monday.
The accused, aged between 18 and 25, face two counts of murder, four counts of attempted murder, possession of the stolen property, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
As many as six people were murdered in Alexandra this week. Others were wounded in the armed robbery spree.
In the court on Monday, the accused were identified as Thubelihle Sibiya, Andile Chonco, Siyabulela Myeni, Goodman Mduduzi Nene, Nkokhelo Chonco, Khanyile Bongani Nceba, Lindokuhle Dludla, Sphelele Khanyile, Nkazi Mbatha, Ziphezinhle Mncwango and Dumisani Sithole.
All the accused were arrested inconnection with the terror unleashed on the community of Alexandra on 14 July 2022.
“People were shot and robbed of their belongings like cellphones, cash and shoes, at five different locations,” said Phindi Mjonondwane, NPA Regional Spokesperson-Gauteng Local Division.
“Two of the people succumbed to gunshot wounds, whilst some are still in the hospital. All accused were remanded in custody, until 25 July 2022, for them to get legal representation and for bail investigations.”
