The Eastern Cape health department on Tuesday said toxicology tests on blood samples from the 21 teenagers, who died at the Enyobeni Tavern in East London, have not been able to conclusively determine the cause of death.

The tragedy unfolded in Scenery Park, East London on Sunday, 26 June 2022 when the bodies of the teenagers were found at the tavern in the early hours.

Initial suggestions that they could have perished in a stampede were quickly dismissed because the bodies did not have injuries.

The youngest child among the deceased was only 13 years old.

Speaking at a media conference at Cambridge Police Station Hall in Garcia Street, East London, Dr. Litha Matiwane said alcohol, carbon monoxide and methanol readings on the deceased were not high enough to “pinpoint the exact cause of death”.

Families of the deceased were in attendance.
