Another person has died in hospital bringing to seven the number of people shot dead by gunmen at a tuckshop in Marianhill, KwaZulu-Natal.
The deadly shooting at Savannah Park on Saturday night left six people dead on the spot and two critically injured – one has since succumbed to his injuries.
Meanwhile, the SA Police Service (SAPS) has mobilised all available police resources to hunt down the gunmen who shot dead six people at Marianhill, KwaZulu-Natal, and wounded two others who are fighting for their lives in hospital.
The deadly shooting at a tuckshop – that reportedly also sells liquor – at about 7.30 pm on Saturday.
Witnesses said a group of men fired shots at the people who were at the tuckshop.
Six men aged between 30 and 65 years of age died on the spot.
Two others survived with gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital, where one succumbed to his injuries and the other remains fighting for his life.
The SAPS said their initial investigations revealed that the tuckshop owner and his two sons were among the deceased.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that the target of the shooting was a man who had been waiting at the tuckshop to meet with a traditional healer.
Suggestions were that the man might have committed a serious crime elsewhere and intended to seek traditional charms from the healer to protect himself from possible repercussions.
The other victims were thought to be collateral damage.
No arrests for the mass shooting have yet been made.
Commenting on the deadly violence, KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said: “This incident once again demonstrates our concern that firearms are contributing to the high levels of crime in the province and we are advocating for stricter regulations regarding the management of legal firearms as many of them end up being used by criminals.
“We will do everything within our control to bring these killers to book,” said Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi, adding that police were mobilising all possible resources to catch the perpetrators.
