A substation in Industria, Johannesburg, caught alight Sunday morning resulting in a power outage in Riverlea, Langlaagte, Industria, Bosmont and surrounding areas.
City Power said the fire started on one of the feeder boards during load-shedding. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
“Emergency services managed to put the fire under control, and they are busy blowing the fumes and smoke from the tunnels,” said Isaac Mangena, City Power Spokesperson.
“They expect work to take between four and five hours before they can hand over the site to City Power to conduct mop up operations.”
Riverlea, Langlaagte, Industria, Bosmont and the surrounding areas will remain in the dark until repairs are completed.
“City Power expects to start with the assessment of the extent of the damage caused by the fire later this evening before repairs can be conducted,” Mangena said.
“We apologise to the affected customers for the inconvenience caused by this.”
