Mpumalanga – A 21-year-old bystander has been fatally shot by a stray bullet fired by armed robbers pursuing a fleeing shop owner.
The incident occurred along Carmen Street in Blesboklaagte, Emalahleni, Nkangala District, just before 11 am on Monday
Netcare 911 said paramedics responded to the shooting.
“Reports indicate that an unknown number of gunmen stormed a foreign-owned business,” said Shawn Herbst, spokesperson for Netcare 911.
“The store owner managed to escape through the front door with the suspects chasing the owner as he ran away.
“Multiple shots were fired in the direction of the store owner who got in a car and drove away.
“On closer inspection, it was found that a 21-year-old bystander had been shot.”
Herbst said the man was found lying face down in a pool of blood.
“Sadly he showed no signs of life and was declared deceased on the scene,” Herbst said.
“Circumstances leading up to the incident will be investigated by the relevant authorities who were on scene.”
