Zwakele Mncwango on Wednesday announced that he was quitting as the Democratic Alliance (DA) Chief Whip in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature.
“It is with a heavy heart that yesterday, I tendered my resignation from the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature effective from the 15th of October 2022,” said Mncwango in a statement sent to the media.
“This decision is predicated on factors that I have pondered over a period of time in terms of my role in politics.
“‘I entered politics for the sole purpose of serving the people of KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa at large for their betterment and progress and to make this country the haven that we all desired it to be.”
Mncwango said deciding to quit was not easy.
“In reaching this decision I engaged in much soul-searching and reflection over a period of time and decided that I had to evaluate how much more of a contribution I could make going forward,” said Mncwango.
“In the process, I questioned whether or not the KZN legislature was the right place to continue to best serve the people of KwaZulu-Natal.
“I met with my provincial leader, Mr. Francois Rogers, on Monday, and had a lengthy discussion with him with regard to my future in politics and expressed my reasons for making such a decision.”
On his future, Mncwango said there were options including remaining in politics, furthering his academic studies, or venturing into the corporate world.
“I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude and thanks to my colleagues, both in the DA provincial caucus, and the party as a whole, for affording me the unique opportunity to serve the people of this great country,” said Mncwango.
“I must add that since I entered the caucus at provincial level, we were united in our efforts to promote the manifesto of the party and to take on issues that we believed were in the best interests of all the citizens of KwaZulu-Natal.
“It is my wish that even upon my departure, that the provincial caucus of the DA remains united as it always has been since I joined and continue to serve the people of this province with aplomb and gusto.”
