Johannesburg – The motorist who ran over a Joburg Metro officer on Sunday while trying to evade a stop-and-search operation in the Orange Farm area remains at large, but his abandoned bakkie has been seized by the Joburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD).
The JMPD said the officer, Aubrey Mufundhisi Muhuvuza, suffered a broken leg when he was hit by a silver-grey Mitsubishi Colt bakkie along the Golden Highway in Orange Farm.
Officer Muhuvuza was airlifted to a hospital, where his condition was said to be stable.
“The driver of the bakkie failed to stop and drove away after crashing into the officer,” said the JMPD.
“Officers on the scene gave chase after the bakkie.
“The bakkie was found abandoned along Mbatha Street in Orange Farm, Extension 1, and the driver was not found.”
The JMPD said paramedics were immediately called to the accident scene.
“Officer Muhuvuza had to be airlifted to Milpark hospital. He is said to be in stable condition with a left leg fracture and was taken to the medical ward for observation,” the JMPD said.
“The Mitsubishi Colt bakkie was seized and a case of reckless and negligent driving, failing to stop at an accident scene and hit and run will be opened at Orange Farm SAPS for further investigation.
“The JMPD management wishes officer Muhuvuza a speedy recovery and no stone will be left unturned to trace and eventually apprehend this reckless driver.”
