Johannesburg – Acting President Angie Motshekga will today deliver a keynote address at the memorial service of Warrant Officer Thomas Shongwe, a presidential protection services member who passed away in a vehicle accident.

The 56-year-old warrant officer died at the scene of Deputy President David Mabuza’s convoy crash in Middelburg at the weekend.

Mabuza was unharmed, but two other SA Police Service (SAPS) officers were injured.

On Wednesday, the acting president visited the family of the deceased officer.

Basic Education Minister Motshekga, who is Acting President in the absence of President Cyril Ramaphosa, has also wished a speedy recovery to the two injured PPS members.

Ramaphosa is on a state visit to the UK.

Before joining the presidential protection services, Warrant Officer Shongwe served in the SAPS VIP services attached to the premier of Mpumalanga until 2018.

The Acting President will attend the memorial service at the SAPS Pretoria West College in Tshwane Thursday morning (24 November 2022).
