Cape Town – The African National Congress (ANC) on Tuesday rallied around President Cyril Ramaphosa and faced down opposition attempts to open an impeachment process against their party leader.
Even with at least five dissenters including Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, ex-premier of the North West Supra Mahumapelo, and Mosebenzi Zwane the former mineral resources minister voting the other way, the ANC held a clear majority.
The ANC and those voting against opening the impeachment process polled 214 of the 400 votes, those in favour only managed 148 and there were two abstentions. Some members did not attend the sitting.
“Therefore the 89 Inquiry will therefore not be proceeded with,” declared Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula amid loud cheers from the ANC benches.
Tuesday’s sitting to debate and consider whether Parliament should begin a process of impeaching Ramaphosa was prompted by the adverse report of the three-member panel that said the President “may have” breached his oath of office and the constitution regarding the 2020 robbery on his Limpopo farm
Ramaphosa, who maintains he did nothing wrong regarding events before and after the robbery, is taking the adverse Section 89 Independent Panel Report on review at the apex court.
