Ga-Rankuwa – The 27-year-old man accused of taking his estranged girlfriend to a graveyard, where he stabbed her to death with a broken bottle while their traumatised child watched – will spend Christmas behind bars.
Murder accused Gopolang Alfred More was this week arrested in connection with the murder of 26-year-old Mariam Makane.
More appeared in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court, where he was remanded in custody until 25 March 2023.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said Thursday that preliminary reports from the police indicate that on Sunday, 18 December 2022, the accused went to fetch his “girlfriend” and their three-year-old child from her home in Mamelodi.
Because Mariam had successfully secured a restraining order to keep More away from her, the NPA said it was unclear how she ended up with him.
More allegedly drove – with mother and child in his car – to a graveyard in Ga-Rankuwa, where he stabbed her several times with a bottle and left her there. The brutal attack took place in front of the child.
He then drove to his home, allegedly still wearing bloodied clothes, where he left the child with his brother.
More is said to have confessed to killing Mariam, resulting in the murder being reported to the police.
The accused was arrested on Tuesday, 20 December 2022.
Henry Mamothame, North West NPA spokesperson, said More will remain in police custody until the next court appearance in March 2023.
