Pretoria – The driver of a BMW sedan on Saturday fled the crash scene after running over nine pedestrians – among them three children who died on the spot.
City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department Spokesperson Thabo Charles Mabaso said the three deceased were small girls aged about five.
Six others – including a heavily pregnant woman – suffered injuries.
“The incident occurred at approximately 17H03 near a traffic circle on 6th and Koch Street at Salvakop in Pretoria,” Mabaso said.
“Emergency Services arrived on the scene to find multiple patients scattered around the scene with the sedan under a partially collapsed tree.
“The driver of the sedan could not be found at the scene of the accident.”
Mabaso said three children were declared dead on the scene by paramedics.
Emer-G-Med later said two of the deceased were twin sisters.
Mabaso said two injured female patients, one of them nine months pregnant, were transported to Steve Biko Hospital.
“Four other female patients were also transported to a hospital with minor to moderate injuries,” he said.
South African Police Services officers were on the scene. They are looking for the driver and investigating the cause of the tragedy.
