Groblersdal – A 50-year-old man patron of Fatcake City, who beat and stomped on a teenage boy while brandishing a gun – simply for asking to use a salt cellar, has been slapped with a jail sentence with an option of a fine.
The accused Corrie Pretorius was sentenced by the Groblersdal Magistrates’ Court to 12 months in prison or a fine of R12 000 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm on a 16-year-old boy and pointing of a firearm.
Half of the sentence was suspended for five years on the condition he did not commit a similar offence during that time.
Pretorious was declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The incident, which occurred at the Groblersdal Game Shopping Centre Mall on 15 June 2022 was captured on video, which went viral on social media.
In the video clip, Pretorius is seen assaulting, swearing, and pointing a firearm at the young male victim for salt.
The accused has pleaded guilty to the offences, and said he was remorseful.
The state Advocate Billy Mudavhi had earlier submitted that the offence was serious and that it was in the interest of the community that Pretorius was sent to prison.
