Johannesburg – Details have emerged of horror at a secondary school where an intruder stabbed a staff member before a teacher shot him dead.
Narrating events leading to the knife-wielding intruder being shot dead, the Gauteng Department of Education said the incident occurred at Kagiso Senior Secondary School, west of Johannesburg.
“We can confirm that we are aware of a shooting incident that allegedly took place today, (3 February 2023), at Kagiso Senior Secondary School,” the department said Friday.
“According to information at our disposal, it is alleged that an unknown man gained access to the school through the main gate when it was remotely opened for a car to drive in.”
The department said the patroller manning the gate failed to stop the intruder from forcing his way past.
“He proceeded to the admin block and hysterically demanded to see the principal,” the department said.
“He was told that the principal was in a meeting and therefore would not see him at that time.
“He allegedly drew a knife and stabbed a teacher in the hand. Subsequently, another teacher allegedly fatally shot him.”
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident.
“Our Psycho-Social Unit will be dispatched to the school on Monday, (6 February 2023), to offer counselling to all the affected learners and teachers,” the department said.
