Moeti, affectionately known as “Dungi” by fans, was a member of the SA men’s national football team that emerged victorious at the African Cup of Nations in 1996.

Announcing Moeti’s passing Rakhale said: “It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that we inform you of the passing of John “Dungi” Moeti.

“John suddenly took ill eight months ago and was receiving specialist medical care.

“John succumbed to his illness in the early hours of this morning at home, surrounded by his family and brethren in prayer.

“We thank you sincerely for your prayers and steadfast support.

“The family wishes to be afforded privacy during this time of loss, and funeral details will be advised in due course.”

The South African Football Association President Danny Jordaan said he wishes healing thoughts and comfort to Moeti’s family.

“The South African Football Association and I wish to convey our sincerest condolences and heartfelt sorrow to the family and friends of Dungi Moeti,” Jordaan said.
