Pretoria – The family of slain Reeva Steenkamp, who was fatally shot through a bathroom door on Valentine’s Day in 2013, have revealed they will oppose parole for her killer Oscar Pistorius.
The disgraced Olympian will have a parole hearing today at the Atteridgeville Correctional Centre after serving eight years of his 13-year sentence.
The double amputee inmate has previously met Reeva’s family as part of the process of seeking parole, but so far, the Steenkamps say they are not convinced that he is truly remorseful or that he deserves to be set free.
Steenkamp family lawyer, Tania Koen, told reporters that the family feels Pistorius should not be let out of prison on parole unless he is “remorseful and rehabilitated”.
Pistorius has never admitted to deliberately shooting at Reeva and has stuck to his story that he thought he was firing at an intruder hiding in his bathroom.
However, Pretorius’ father said he was “excited” by the prospect of having him home.
