Bloemfontein – Convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester is expected to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court Friday, (14 April 2023), following his re-arrest in Tanzania and subsequent return to South Africa.
Bester was serving a life sentence at the time of his escape from the Mangaung Correctional Centre, nearly a year ago.
National SA Police Service Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said Bester faces a charge of escaping from lawful custody, defeating the ends of justice, violation of a dead body, and fraud.
Bester, also known as the “Facebook” rapist because he used the social media platform to lure his victims, was arrested in Tanzania along with his partner Dr. Nandipha Magudumana.

The pair were brought back to South Africa on Thursday.
Dr. Magudumana appeared in court the same day and was remanded in custody until her next appearance.
