Ngqeleni – Two inmates bolted from a sports field and escaped from Ngqeleni Correctional Centre, Eastern Cape, on Freedom Day.
The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) on Thursday said convicted rapists Siyabulela Khohliso and Athini Nothi Mzingelwa – were serving 10 and eight years in prison respectively when they escaped.
“The two escaped at about 15:30 on 27 April 2023 from the sports field,” said the DCS.
The DCS said it has launched a manhunt for the escapees.
“Additional resources have been deployed in support of the Emergency Support Team of Correctional Services working together with the South African Police Service to hunt down the two inmates,” said the DCS.
“An investigation into this incident has been launched by DCS. But critical at this stage is the rearrest of the two offenders.
“Members of the public are urged to contact the nearest police station should they come into contact with the two escapees.”
