Ngqeleni – The second escaped convicted rapist Athini Nothi Mzingelwa has been rearrested.
Mzingelwa and Siyabulela Khohliso – both convicted rapists – escaped from Ngqeleni Correctional Centre, in the Eastern Cape, on Freedom Day, (27 April 2023).
Khohliso was rearrested earlier this week.

On Wednesday, authorities said Mzingelwa had also been rearrested.
“The rearrest was effected at about 11h00 today (3 May 2023) at Mthatha General Hospital,” Singabakho Nxumalo, spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services, said Wednesday.
Correctional Services National Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale has applauded the assistance of community members who often provide the Department of Correctional Services with useful leads during manhunts.
“Such was the case again in recapturing Mzingelwa,” said Nxumalo.
“The offender is back in the care of Correctional Services and will join Siyabulela Khohliso as they are to face a new criminal charge for escaping from lawful custody.”
Meanwhile, 10 prison officials, who were on duty on the day the pair escaped, have been suspended, the department said.
