Durban – One person died early Sunday morning when the bakkie he was travelling overturned along the M1 Higginson Highway – between Westcliff and RK Khan’s offramp.
At least 11 others, who were ejected from the back of the bakkie when it left the road and rolled down an embankment, survived the crash.
ALS Paramedics said they responded to a serious single-vehicle collision “Just after 2:30 this morning”.
On arrival, paramedics said they found chaos at the crash scene.
Paramedics said they “did an initial triage and found that unfortunately a male believed to be in his 30s had sustained major injuries”.
There was nothing more they could do for him, paramedics said.
They declared the man deceased on the scene.
A second patient was found entrapped in the wreckage.
The Durban Fire Department used the Jaws of Life and other hydraulic equipment to free the patients whe paramedics treated the patient.
ALS Paramedics said 11 people ejected from the bakkie sustained various injuries ranging from minor to serious.
“Once stabilised on scene by numerous ambulances they were transported to various Durban hospitals for the further care that they required,” ALS Paramedics said.
“At this stage the events leading up to the collision is unknown, however, South African Police Service were on the scene and will be investigating further.”
