UNTIMELY PASSING: Filmmaker and Producer Teboho Moseling Mahlatsi has passed away
SHARE

Johannesburg – Filmmaker and Producer Teboho Moseling Mahlatsi has passed away.

His family on Monday said: “It is with the saddest regret that we announce the untimely passing of Filmmaker and Producer – Teboho Moseling Mahlatsi, on the 3rd of July 2023”.

In their terse statement, the Mahlatsi family added: ”In lieu of personal condolences, the family kindly requests prayers and that they be given privacy to mourn and come to terms with the tragic loss.

“Further details will be communicated in due time.”

The cause of death was not mentioned.

Mahlatsi directed several movies including:

  • Meet Bheki: The Mbhaco Maker (2017);
  • Shuga (2009–2012),
  • Sekalli le Meokgo (Meokgo and the Stick Fighter) (2006);
  • A-Z – A Commentary on Post-Apartheid South Africa (2001);
  • Ungshaya Ding Dong (2000); and
  • White City Black Lives (1997).

Through Bomb Productions, Mahlatsi co-created and produced series such as Yizo-Yizo, Zone 14, Isibaya, Jacob’s Cross, Shaka – Ilembe, and many others productions.

Sport, Arts, and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa said he was “saddened” by the passing of the pioneering filmmaker and producer.

As one of the creative compasses of Bomb Productions, the television production company, Mahlatsi brought to audiences captivating films and television series which characterised quintessential South African lives.

“Teboho Mahlatsi’s work highlighted the multidimensional nature of life in democratic South Africa,” said Minister Kodwa.

“He showed the beauty and vulnerabilities that come with the mixture of cultures in South African life.

“His works such as Yizo-Yizo, Zone 14, and the many advertisements and films, gave an authentic, hard-hitting, yet relatable account of South African communities”.

Mahlatsi won many awards for his work.

“I wish to express my deepest sympathies to the Mahlatsi family, and Desiree Markgraaff and Angus Gibson, with whom Mr. Mahlatsi produced some of the best of South African television and film at Bomb Productions,” the minister said.

“South Africa has lost a titan in television and film.”
