Pretoria – Two people have been arrested in connection with the torching of haulage trucks, the South African Police Service (SAPS) said Thursday.
“A multidisciplinary team assigned with investigating the attacks and burning of trucks have made their first arrests this morning in Mpumalanga,” said SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.
At least 15 haulage trucks have been set alight since the weekend in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo.
“Two men aged 29 and 27 were arrested at their place of residence.
“The first suspect was arrested on a farm in Piet Retief with the assistance of a private security firm and the other in Ermelo.
“Both suspects face a charge of malicious damage to property.”
The National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, said the net was closing in on those behind these attacks.
“Police are hot on the heels of more suspects which involve the ring leaders of these sporadic incidents of criminality. Either they hand themselves over or we fetch them ourselves,” said General Masemola.
High-density operations continue through roadblocks, stop-and-search operations, and the tracing of these wanted suspects.
