Mbombela (Nelspruit) – Pub patrons displayed a bout of Dutch courage when they pummelled an AK-47 wielding robber who had targeted their watering hole for some loot.
The weekend beating was so thorough the robber remains hospitalised.
Fortunately for the brave patrons of the Pub at KaMaqhekeza, near Tonga outside Malelane in Mpumalanga, the gunman had no bullets in his AK47 assault rifle.
Speaking to The Bulrushes, Mpumalanga SA Police Service Spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said that the suspect, who is under guard at the hospital, will appear in the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court as soon as he is well enough to do so.
Narrating the events leading to the citizen’s arrest of the armed robber, Brigadier Mohlala said: “The AK-47 wielding suspect was reportedly assaulted by community members”.
Brigadier Mohlala added: “The suspect was trying to commit robbery with a firearm at a certain pub grill.
“People who were inside cornered and apprehended him after severely assaulting him.
“It was then later transpired that the firearm he was holding didn’t have any ammunition.”
However, Brigadier Mohlala warned residents against taking the law into their own hands.
