Johannesburg – The eight SA Police Service VIP Protection Unit members arrested for assaulting a motorist and his passengers were granted R10 000 bail each, on Tuesday morning, by the Randburg Magistrate’s Court.
The accused – Johannes Mampuru, Joseph Mofokeng, Harmans Ramokhonami, Phineas Boshielo, Churchill Mkhize, Aggrie Rambau, and Moses Tshidada – are facing multiple charges.
The charges include contravention of the Firearms Control Act, negligent driving, malicious damage to property, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, attempting to defeat the ends of justice, and assault by way of a threat.
The case relates to an assault incident on 2 July 2023 that occurred along the N1.

Allegations are that the VIP Protection Unit members assigned to Vice President Paul Mashatile were involved in the assault.
The vicious assault was recorded on camera and the video subsequently went viral on social media.
In the video, the accused can be seen assaulting the occupants of a vehicle with open hands and stomping on one of them.
On Tuesday all accused were granted bail with conditions.
The accused were warned not to contact State witnesses either directly or indirectly.
They were also warned not to interfere with state investigations in any manner.
The matter was adjourned to 27 September 2023, to allow for further investigations.
