Mbombela (Nelspruit) – SA Police Service (SAPS) officers caught up with a stolen trailer they were tracking before it could be towed into Mozambique and to their shock and horror they found a corpse inside.
Mpumalanga SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said they received information from a tracking company about a stolen trailer travelling on the national road toward Mozambique.
Brigadier Mohlala said that the trailer, which was being towed by a minibus taxi, had been reported stolen in Johannesburg, Gauteng.
“Police intercepted the taxi. When the taxi was searched, police made a shocking discovery of a coffin with a corpse,” Brigader Mohlala said on Thursday.
The minibus taxi driver, later identified as Nhlanhla Mkhabela, was arrested along the N4 in Malelane, Mpumalanga, on Wednesday night.
When the 28-year-old minibus driver was arrested his taxi was full of passengers heading for Mozambique.
Mkhabela was charged with possession of suspected stolen property.
He appeared in the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga.
The accused was remanded in custody until Monday when he is expected to apply for bail application.
Brigadier Mohlala said: “An arrangement had to be made with a local funeral parlour to transport the corpse to its final destination”.
