SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN: Sixto Diaz Rodriguez has died at the age of 81
SHARE

Johannesburg – The star of the movie “Searching For Sugar Man” Sixto Diaz Rodriguez has died.

“It is with great sadness that we at Sugarman.org announce that Sixto Diaz Rodriguez passed away earlier today,” a blog on his website said on Wednesday.

“We extend our most heartfelt condolences to his daughters – Sandra, Eva, and Regan – and to all his family.”

Rodriguez was 81 years old.

About a decade ago, Searching for Sugar Man – the 2012 documentary film about Rodriguez, a South African cultural phenomenon, was a hit with fans.

Written and directed by Mlik Bendjellout, Searching for Sugar Man, details the efforts in the late 1990s of two Cape Town fans Stephen “Sugar” Segerman and Craig Bartholomew Strydom, to find out whether the rumoured death the American musician was indeed true.

Rodriguez’s music, which had never achieved success in the United States, had become very popular in South Africa, although little was known about him there.

Searching for Sugar Man turned out to be a thrilling journey to discover what had become of him.

“May his dear soul rest In peace.”
