London – Thousands of residents in Hawaii have been battling deadly wildfires to escape their homes.
The wildfires in the U.S.A. state of Hawaii, on the island of Maui, have grown increasingly worse.
Due to dry conditions combined with high winds and droughts have contributed to the unprecedented fires.
In addition, hurricane Dora, is fuelling the fires as even more heavy winds have played a huge part.
According to officials, 55 people have died with 1 000 people still missing on Hawaii Island.
Officials declared this a state of emergency and have warned that the situation will get worse.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green says that it is possible more than 1 700 buildings have been destroyed by the fire and 80% of the historic seaside town of Lahaina is “gone.
Green adds that he believes that the death toll is expected to rise even more.
Over 2 000 people have spent overnight in shelters concerned and stressed for loved ones that they have not heard from.
This is mainly because the power has been cut no radio or phone signal across the island.
There is also no internet to locate people, which makes communication unclear as to whether they are alive or even safe.
Rescues rise, and rescue teams are even being sent from California a state more often hit by wildfires than Hawaii.
People are running for their lives. It is a dire situation in Hawaii which is terrifying for its people.
There is no doubt that so far thousands of people have lost their homes, lost their work, and realise it will take several years to rebuild and move on from this tragedy.
