Johannesburg – A shooting incident in Alex has left three people dead and others injured.
The police in Alexandra said they were investigating three counts of murder and attempted murder following a shooting at Ext 8 Eastbank on Friday evening, (11 August 2023).
Witnesses said the shooting incident occurred at about 20:00 – during load-shedding.
Three people – one of them a leader and founder of the local Community Police Forum (CPF) patrol group at Phase 2, Far East Bank – were shot dead.
A woman, who said one of the deceased was her cousin, said the CPF leader was shot multiple times and died on the scene.
She said the other two deceased – one of them her cousin, were shot fewer times.
“We had sent them to buy drinks,” lamented the woman who asked not to be named.
The woman said the cold-blooded killers searched the deceased and made off with their wallets and cellphones.
“It is reported that local community patrollers were busy with their briefing when a group of men approached and started shooting at them,” said Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, an SA Police Service spokesperson.
“One patroller died on the scene and two other victims who were coming from a nearby tavern were also fatally shot while three other patrollers were taken to a local clinic with gunshot wounds.”
No arrests have been reported and the deceased have not yet been identified.
