Pietermaritzburg – A police officer, and a Tow Truck Operator attending to a crash scene were fatally run over when a passing truck plowed into them.
A medic who was also on the scene survived with serious injuries.
ALS Paramedics said the tragedy occurred late Friday night, Just after 10pm.
“Paramedics from our Pietermaritzburg operation responded to a truck that had overturned on the N3 South Bound near Liberty Mall,” said ALS Paramedics.
“On arrival together with RTI and other role players, paramedics found that a truck had overturned coming to rest on its side.
“RTI Traffic Police cornered off the area and placed vehicles strategically to provide advanced warning of the accident scene.”
ALS Paramedics staff were attending to the truck driver, who had sustained minor injuries when another truck ploughed into the accident scene.
“Unfortunately, there were three casualties injured in the secondary collision,” said ALS Paramedics.
“A police officer, a tow truck operator, and one of our medics were struck.
“Unfortunately, the Police Officer and the tow truck operator passed away on the scene as a result of their injuries.
“Our medic was in a critical condition and rushed through to the hospital for the specialist care he required.”
ALS Paramedics added: “Our medic underwent emergency surgery shortly thereafter.
“We would like to send our condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the police officer and tow truck operator.
“We wish our staff member a speedy recovery.”
The SA Police Service was investigating the cause of the deadly crash.
