Potchefstroom – Five Nigerians have appeared in the Potchefstroom Magistrate’s Court facing 14 counts of dealing in drugs valued at more than R2 million.

The case against 30-year-old Veronica Agu, 51-year-old Pascal Enuma Ezekwueme, 38-year-old Solomon Ezeh, 44-year-old Robinson Ikechukwa Okoye, and 41-year-old Kingsley Ikenna Onbumneme was postponed to 20 September 2023, for formal bail application.

The suspects were arrested on Wednesday, (13 September 2023), during a takedown operation in the North West and Gauteng provinces.

The takedown involved teams from the Hawks Investigation Unit, Tactical Operations Management Section, National Intervention Unit, Stilfontein Dog Unit, Potchefstroom Drug Task Team, Ekurhuleni District Task Team, and Bad Boyz Security.

Commenting on the arrest of the five suspects, National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Henry Mamothame said information was received about a syndicate alleged to be involved in the distribution and selling of illegal narcotics in the two provinces.

“The information was operationalised and the team pounced on the suspects at various identified houses. All five will remain in police custody until the next court appearance,” said Mamothame.

He said the verification process to determine the immigration status in South Africa of the accused was already underway.
