Bushbuckridge – A woman accused of dumping her newborn baby boy in a pit toilet at a church before disappearing has been arrested and remanded in custody by the Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s Court.
Noise Mhaule appeared in court on Wednesday. She allegedly dumped her newborn baby over the weekend.
The newborn baby, with its umbilical cord still attached, was rescued from the pit toilet in Ronaldsey Trust, near Ximhungwe outside Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga on Sunday morning.
The baby’s mother has been charged with neglect and is expected to appear in court again tomorrow (Thursday) after her matter was postponed to allow her to get a legal representative.
Commenting on the rescue, Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, said: “Members of the public heard a cry of a baby inside a pit toilet.
“They then alerted the authorities and dug (a hole) behind the toilet and managed to rescue the child whose umbilical cord was still attached.”
Colonel Mdhluli said the newborn baby boy was taken to a hospital.
