Mkhondo (Piet Retief) – Five people died Saturday afternoon in a horror head-on collision between an articulated truck and a bakkie along the N2 in Mkhondo (formerly Piet Retief), Mpumalanga.
Reports from the crash scene said all five of the deceased had been travelling in the bakkie.
The truck driver sustained serious injuries.
Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security, and Liaison Spokesperson Moeti Mmusi said a preliminary probe suggested that the violation of traffic rules may have contributed to the terrible accident.
“It is suspected that one of the drivers may have transgressed the rules leading to this crash. An investigation into this horrific collision has already commenced,” Mmusi said.
Commenting on the tragedy, Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe: “It is sad that while we commemorate October as a Transport Month, we continue to lose lives on the roads.
“We are therefore appealing for heightened adherence to the rules on the part of all road users.”
The deadly collision was a sad end to October, which forms part of the National Transport Month commemoration – aimed at promoting transport reliability and road safety.
