Poachers Kill 2 Rhino On Pomo Estate in Waterberg District, Police Launch Probe

Polokwane – The police in Rooiberg are investigating a poaching incident in which two rhino were shot and their horns removed at Pomo Estate in Waterberg District, Limpopo, on Monday, (30 October 2023).

Narrating events leading to the discovery of the carcasses, SA Police Service Spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said the complainant last saw his rhinos on Sunday, (29 October 2023), at about 09:20 in the morning.

There was nothing amiss at the time.

However, things changed the next day.

“It is alleged that on Monday at about 09:35, the complainant received a phone call from his employee informing him of suspicious footprints found on the farm and upon checking around there was no fence cut,” said Brigadier Mashaba. 

“Upon proceeding to the rhino camp, they discovered two rhinos had been shot and killed. Their horns had been removed.”  

Brigadier Mashaba said circumstances surrounding the incident were being investigated and the case docket of Rhino Poaching is being allocated to the Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit for further handling.

“We are appealing to anyone with information that can assist to arrest the suspects to contact the Investigating Officer Detective Warrant Officer Jurg Van Heerden at 082 414 2337 or to Crime Stop at 08600 10111 alternatively report to the nearest Police Station and can also share it anonymously on MySAPSApp,” said Brigadier Mashaba.
